Managing competing interests

When residents, businesses and developers want different things, whose interests win?

Longer version: L09 · When residents, businesses, developers, City staff and advocacy groups all want different outcomes, how do you decide whose interests prevail?

Your answer

Denise Walcott

The public interest comes first. I would listen to all sides and assess housing affordability, tenant protections, local jobs, safety and environmental impacts. Residents’ well-being would guide my decision, including people who are less often heard. I would explain the trade-offs and who benefits from the outcome.
