Coalition building

How will you win the votes of the other councillors for something Ward 14 needs?

Longer version: L03 · You will have one vote on Council. How will you persuade 12 or 13 other councillors to support something Ward 14 needs?

Your answer

Maria Voutsinas

City Hall and City Council requires collaboration to get anything done. Without a party system, councillors are free to vote based on their own perspective on each issue. That requires discussion, sharing of facts and opinions and working together to achieve results.

I would build relationships before asking for votes, listen to councillors’ concerns and show where Ward 14’s needs overlap with theirs. I would work with staff on evidence, costs and funding, seek co-sponsors and negotiate practical changes so councillors have a clear reason to support a motion.
