City finances & taxes

Would you raise, hold or cut property taxes next year?

Longer version: P06 · Toronto needs better services but has limited money. What would you spend more on, what would you spend less on, and what taxes or fees, if any, would you change?

Your answer

Maria Voutsinas

I would have to review the budget to determine if there was sufficient revenue. The province has increasingly downloaded responsibility for costs on the city and there are increased costs to respond to climate change crises. We may have to raise property taxes to deal with financial pressures.

Denise Walcott

I would limit property-tax increases to inflation and consider a freeze after reviewing the budget. I would review spending and contracts for recurring savings and pursue reliable funding, while protecting staffing needed for frontline services, TTC reliability, maintenance, debt payments and reserves.
